SANKOFA, in the Akan language of Ghana, literally means «go back and retrieve » . The symbol is based on a mythical bird that flies forward with its head turned backwards. This reflects the Akan belief that the past serves as a guide for planning and building the future.
Ghana, an Anglophone country of West Africa, is still relatively unknown in France. The association SANKOFA has therefore been created to establish a close relationship between Ghanaians and French, and allow the French people (even the French with Ghanaian origin) to discover and know more about Ghana and its culture, and also to assist the migrant Ghanaians to well integrate and find their rightful place within the French multicultural setting while maintaining socio-economic links with their roots.
Based at Toulouse, the association was founded in 2007 by a group of Ghanaians and French living in France. It is registered at the District Administration (Prefecture of Haute-Garonne) with registration n° W313005466. The association SANKOFA is open to all those who love Ghana, vehemently wish to contribute to its socio-cultural development, and desire to follow current economic and political trends in Ghana.
Mission
SANKOFA, an intercultural association, has a mission to develop and broadens bilateral relationship between Ghana and France through non-governmental means of international solidarity, socio-cultural exchanges, and economic activities within the optic of sustainable development.
Objectives
The objectives of the association are ;
to encourage cultural diversity through socio-cultural exchanges between French and Ghanaians;
to promote and support the creation and the diffusion of Ghanaian arts and crafts in France;
to bring communities to develop their logic of integration, solidarity and international cooperation through cultural activities;
to promote and accompany socio-economic projects within the framework of the French governments’ decentralised cooperation policy;
to inform and accompany Ghanaians and Franco-Ghanaians in France who wish to establish or implant their socio-economic enterprises in Ghana.
Domain of interventions (Actions)
Cultural and Artistic Activities
●exhibitions, fairs, entertainments and festivals, concerts and friendly get-togethers (parties)
●establish and manage a cultural and multi-media centre for the consultation and borrowing of Ghanaian and African cultural products or works, in all forms, like story and text books, magazines, audio and video musical discs, films etc.
Socio-cultural Activities
●courses in languages, modern and traditional music, drumming and dancing etc.;
●multi-cultural conferences, colloquium, and seminars;
●creating cultural links through exchanges between schools, youth association, clubs etc.;
Welfare and development cooperation activities
●administrative, legal, and mutual assistance for Ghanaian migrants in France;
●feasibility studies, evaluation and moral support for decentralised cooperation projects and twinning of communities;
●propose and research for economic and institutional partnership for the realisation of projects in the areas of Community Health and Sanitation, Agriculture and Food Security, Education, and Sustainable Tourism;
●counselling and training programmes for entrepreneurs wishing to establish businesses in Ghana and in France.
